A Korean woman who was found guilty of having sex with South Korean officials in order to get them to give her sensitive information, which she then gave to her North Korean bosses, was convicted to five years imprisonment on Wednesday.
Won Jeong Hwa was arrested in July of this year, on charges of giving classified information to the South?s enemy. This sensitive information included the locations of key military installations, lists of North Korean defectors and personal information on South Korean military officers.
Additionally, prosecutors said, Won planned to kill South Korean officials by poisoning them. She did not execute those plans, however.
Five years seems to be a ridiculously mild sentence for a person found guilty of betraying her nation, and giving classified information to the nation?s main enemy. Only a few decades ago, such an individual would have received the death penalty. Today, traitors are treated like common thiefs.
For some reason I don?t think that this five year sentence will prevent other South Koreans thinking about spying for the North from doing so.
